Can Youth Mobilize Change?

Post the development of Marxist ideas, and the evolution of Gandhian and Laissez-faire school of thoughts, the world has not yet seen the emergence of another sweeping thought process which is powerful enough to grab the attention of all and sundry. What does thought process have anything to do with change one might question? The answer is relatively simple, change - wherever it may happen or whatever be its social form, first originates in the precincts of the human mind. Change is not just an idea; it is the result of a social vacuum. Change can be both positive and negative and its undercurrents are strong enough to shake the bulwarks of existing institutions or beliefs.
Change itself can’t manifest itself on the fabric of the society. It needs agents – change agents, people who can not only spread ideas but also implement the change. A bright young example that comes to mind is that of Joan of Arc. The Maid of Orleans not only motivated the French army but led them to several victories against the tyrant British rule. Nearer home we have several examples as well; people like Shaheed Bhagat Singh, Swami Vivekananda not only inspired the masses but also led by example. All the change instituted by them wasn’t an example of frenzied activity rather it was of transformation based on new ideas that appealed to the masses.
The various examples cited above suffer from the bias of picking the youth leaders only. But that has been done on purpose, for it is the youth alone that can make a difference to the society. History stands testimony to the fact that whenever the winds of change have swept across continents or kingdoms it has been driven by the power of youth. The thought leadership might have been new or old but the change has been implemented through young people. No wonder it is said the youth are the future of any country.
It is said that the reins of a wild horse must be in the hands of a strong man. Change is indeed like a wild horse that needs to be controlled else it can unleash destruction in its wake. What better hand to tame the horse than the brave spirit of a young man who isn’t afraid to fall in the process. Change is like the wild storm that changes its direction only when it meets the unmovable mountain. Let the spirit of youth be that mountain and let it not be misguided by the follies of this treacherous world. Thus youth guided by the wisdom of the old and the experienced can be the face of any change that is necessary in this world. As the saying goes that you should be the change that you want to see, and the time is indeed ripe for young people like us to be the change!
P.S - I wrote this essay as a part of a competition in my college.
